I have known the artist Sanja Ivekovic since the early 1980\'s and regard her as one of the most vital and original artists to have emerged in Central Europe since the 1970\'s. Her work is engaged, insightful and highly relevant to our contemporary world. I deplore the actions that have led to the cancellation of her participation in the Sao Paolo bienale.

..This curator who did try to humiliate Sanja Ivekovic in such an ugly way needs a large break from curating shows like the one in Sao Paolo.

I fully support artist Sanja Ivekovic. As a curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb I\'m ashamed by the mode of proceeding of the Croatian commissioner for Sao Paulo Biennial, Ms. Leonida Kovac.I disagree with Ms. Kovac\'s arguments by which she justifies her cancellaton of the Sanja Ivekovic\'s project because I find them nonvalid and nonrelevant for the art matter.

Please enclose my name to support Sanja Ivekovic. I was personally shoked with the manipulation of Leonida Kovac, curator of MOCA Zagreb. I am working also in the same institution but I cannotand I do not share arrogance and non-professionalism of my former colleague Ms. Kovac. So, once again, add my name in support the artist. It does not surprise me at all. It is not happening in one place alone, it is a global issue. Too many power mongers who think that they are worthy of such positions, exploiting artists & creative entities for their own gains and positions at whatever cost. This example, situation is part of the problem when such individuals and groups are not questioned for their actions when playing about with artists\' projects/works with such flippant disrespect. It is a sorry state of affairs and does not bode well.

To whom it might concern,

I write in protest at the treatment of Sanja Ivekovic by the curator for the Croation component of the Sao Paulo Bienale.

There can be no reason for changing, at the last moment, the choice of an artist for such a prestigious event (or any other event or project) unless the artist has broken their side of a legal agreement pertaining to the event. Even if the artist were to die prior to the event it seems to me only honourable, and perhaps a legal requirement, that the same artist would continue to represent their country.

To me what has happened to Sanja Ivekovic is not only likely legally questionable but also morally reprehensible. Such confusion and poor practice on behalf of the curator in question should lead to their immediate dismissal and the reinstatement of Sanja Ivekovic as Croatia's artist representative at the Sao Paulo Bienale.

Yours

This is one of the worst news I have received for a long time. Sanja Ivekovic, a very good friend of mine, is the artist the work I respect very much. Her political and social position as well as her artistic approach is a very important part of the art world nowadays. I also have met several times Leonida Kovac. I always thought she is a good, professional curator. Now I do not know if I was wrong or there are just people who are unable to be responsible or to resist the pressure. I do not now. What I know however is that one should not do anything like Leonida did. Any curator who want to respect himself or herself cannot behave like that. The curatorial job is extremely important as curator is a bridge between the artist and the public. The more power curator has the most responsible s/he is to be. I cannot see that in the decision of Leonida Kovac. I believe the project of Sanja will be realised in Sao Paulo somehow. I hope Leonida Kovac will understand what curator should never do. But even then world is not going to stay the same.

DECLARATION

Impelled by the canceling of the participation of Ms. Sanja Ivekovic at the Biennale in Sao Paolo, the Centre for Women's Studies wishes to express its concern over the possibility that the international reputation, which has been built over many decades by this artist, will be brought into question. The Centre regrets that this dispute was not resolved in a way benefitting to the dauntlessness and talent of artist Ms. Sanja Ivekovic and curator Ms. Leonida Kovac.
